Our Approach
Mentoring&More is a mentoring program….but so much more!
Each student is paired with a mentor for four years of high school
They
- Meet twice a month for lunch
- Plan the course of study
- Research colleges
- Research scholarships
- Develop strong communication
- Develop a bond
There is a focus on developing a whole group support system:
We
- Meet as a group once a month
- Applaud each accomplishment
- Celebrate with families:
- The beginning of the year
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- The end of the year
- Plan group outings
- Develop grade level interaction
- Expect our graduates to become role models
The mentors’ responsibilities are to anticipate and to respond to his/her mentee’s needs:
They
- Oversee a rigorous course selection
- Monitor grades and extra curricular activities
- Ensure a commitment to a volunteer effort
- Secure any needed academic remediation
- Encourage academic and personal enrichment programs
- Become knowledgeable about the college admissions process
- Take student and parents to college campus visits
- Attend college fairs with student
- Celebrate student’s accomplishments
- Seek internship opportunities
The mentees’ responsibilities are to:
- Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA
- Select class schedules that are college appropriate
- Take the highest level courses possible
- Make a volunteer commitment that will accrue at least 100 hours
- Participate in extra curricular activities
- Take advantage of personal growth opportunities
- Seek leadership roles
- Communicate with mentor
- Develop self-advocacy skills
- Participate in M&M group activities
- Focus on college tests and admissions
- Be proactive in the scholarship search
- Take responsibility for their college path
